Havana to Trinidad Bike Ride, Cuba

Covered 270 miles (440kms) from coast to coast
Passed villages, fruit orchards & sugar plantations
World Heritage sites of Havana and Trinidad
Sampled Cuba's warm hospitality and party atmosphere
Explored Old Havana

This ten-day expedition started in the vibrant capital and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Havana, and ended in Trinidad, another World Heritage Site. We explored Havana, the Caribbean's largest city, which was like travelling 50 years back in time. The buildings have remained largely undeveloped for more than half a century, and most cars - like Chevys and Buicks - pre-date the Revolution.

Heavily influenced by Cuba's Spanish colonial past, the architecture features pretty inner courtyards and tiled walls. Much of the city's old quarter also remains intact, despite the various wars and revolutions of the last 200 years.

On leaving Havana we noticed few vehicles on the road. Cuba has a strong biking culture, so we fitted right in! In all we cycled more than 440kms, most of which was on fairly level tarmac roads. Village after village we passed through, separated by colourful fruit orchards, sugar plantations and tree-lined avenues. We rode over and alongside many rural rail tracks, which are used at harvest time to transport sugar to the ports for distribution.

Our route passed through Cienfuegos, which sits in a bay facing the Caribbean Sea, and continues to the lower slopes of the Sierra del Escambray before finally reaching Trinidad. With its cobbled streets and colonial housing, Trinidad is a city steeped in history. Having completed our challenge, we relaxed by soaking up some of the traditional Cuban warmth and party spirit and dining and salsa dancing, before returning to Havana.
